Creative Development Residency

15 local dance students create new steps with hands-on help from the Russian Ballet Master!

Moscow Ballet’s Ballet Master Anna Nekhludova, and Choreographer-Producer Mary Giannone Talmi worked 1-on-1 with 15 local ballet students, ages 7 to 16, creating new choreography for 2013 tour of Great Russian Nutcracker this August .  The 21 year old “Dance with Us” program has always included student dancers in the professional performances, as was done in the original productions in Russia. Young ballerinas-to-be audition, rehearse and then dance side-by-side with 35-some professionals in a once in a lifetime experience. The student dancers perform roles such as Party Children, Mice and Little Snowflakes in Act I and Snow Maidens and more in Act II. The roles are ancillary to the production and were developed explicitly to fit different age and experience levels.  Each year over 5000 young dancers participate and perform, that’s about 100,000 great experiences over the past 20 years of touring!

The residency was held in western Massachusetts over 5 intense days of work. Moscow Ballet Master Anna Nekhludova, a graduate of Moscow State Academy of Choreography commonly known as the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, began her career at the Kremlin Palace of Congresses and brings the best ballet training in the world with her to this CDR. Producer and Choreographer Mary Giannone Talmi, a graduate of the Julliard School,  has choreographed for American Ballet Theatre II under Baryshnikov, Boston Ballet II, Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, among others. Together with young ballet students in Albany/Western Massachusetts, the group will create new steps for “Dance with Us” children to perform on the 2013 tour. Find out more about auditioning here.
